Matter and Energy
The purpose of the Matter and Energy class is to provide a foundation in the understanding of the processes of life and the world surrounding us through discussion of events in the news and the Scientific Method of Inquiry: Formulation of Hypothesis; Experimental Testing of Hypothesis; Analysis of Experiment and Conclusion of Observations.
Integrating the Sciences
This course is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable them to apply scientific skills and processes in our world and society. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to identify and explain major scientific concepts, natural phenomena and their interrelationships with other scientific, technological and societal issues.
Biology is the study of life and the processes that make life possible. This class is designed to prepare students to successfully take the High School Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA). By the end of the year, students will be able to: successfully apply the scientific method to real world situations in order to solve problems, safely operate within a laboratory setting, recognize biological processes occurring in nature, and demonstrate an understanding of the nature of science.
This course follows the Prince George’s County Public School Biology 1 Curriculum and the state of Maryland’s learning standards for Biology.
Biology II concentrates on Human Anatomy and Physiology. Anatomy is the study of the structures and form of the human body. Physiology is the study of the function of the structures within the body. This class is designed to prepare students for college level Anatomy and Physiology courses.
By the end of this year, students will be able to identify parts found in all human body systems. They will be able to successfully navigate a specimen using terminology and directionality. They will be able to identify tissues while efficiently using a microscope.
The Chemistry course is designed to endow students with the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable them to apply scientific skills and processes for practical chemistry science concepts. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate the ability to apply scientific skills and processes in order to explain composition and interactions of matter in the world in which we live.
In this class, students will learn to think scientifically in regard to environmental issues. They will learn and apply knowledge toward conservation and will investigate global and local environments.
