Chelsea School is committed to the development of the whole child. Along with academic development, we hope to promote the positive psycho-social development of each student. To this end, a significant piece of Chelsea School’s program includes a service-learning requirement. Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with hands-on instruction and reflection to deepen the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen Chelsea School’s Community as well as the communities in the Greater Washington, DC area.

All students at Chelsea School are expected to complete 60 hours of direct service between the grades 5-12. Students who are funded from public school jurisdictions must comply with the minimal service learning standard in order to receive a high school diploma. For example:

Washington DC- 100 hours
Prince George’s County- 36 hours
Montgomery County- 60 hours
Anne Arundel County- 75 hours

Students complete service learning projects on their own, through classroom curriculum activities as well as through Chelsea School sponsored events. All projects are non-paid and include preparation, action and reflection and should be completed in a non-profit setting with the exceptions of nursing homes, hospitals and licensed day-care facilities.
