Dear Chelsea School Parents/Guardians and Students,
Below you will find your summer reading list and assignments. Each student must read 1 book from the Grade Level Reading List and 1 book from the Leveled Reading List (Yes, you must read 2 books this summer). When looking at the Grade Level Reading List, choose a book for the grade you are going into. The Leveled Reading List has been created so that each student is assigned a letter, corresponding to his/her reading level (A-D). The letter that best matches your reading level is highlighted in yellow. Look over the book choices within your level and choose at least one book to read this summer. If you do not want to read any of the books on the list, you may read any book from Montgomery County Public Library’s reading list (ask a librarian for more information).
In addition to reading your books, you must complete the attached assignment for each book. You should bring the completed assignment to the first day of school and give it to your English teacher. Completing the reading and writing assignment will be 10% of the first quarter grade.
Summer reading is important for developing reading skills and preventing loss of learned skills. Research suggests that reading, like most skills, improves with practice and decreases when we neglect it even for a short time. In fact, a new study completed by The Center for Summer Learning at the Johns Hopkins University, found that some students lose one to two months worth of reading and math skills during summer break, and teachers often spend four to six weeks at the beginning of each school year re-teaching material that students have forgotten.*
All students must complete their summer reading! Have a safe and happy summer!
Sincerely,
Bob Bolin, English Department Coordinator
