A Girl Named Maria includes a student's experiences at Chelsea, as told by her mother, Valerie S Kreutzer.

"The yellow school bus started stopping at our house in September, marking the beginning of Maria's academic recovery. She was the last student to board, just a mile and a half from Chelsea. Kids came from a forty-mile radius, and, by the time they reached our house, some had been meandering on the bus for hours. They got used to a longer stop on Alaska Avenue as they watched Maria fly down our steep embankment half dressed.

She usually returned by six after extracurricular activities, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, and student council. She did her homework without prompting, loved math and science, and opined freely in her social studies and history classes...

During these first months at Chelsea, we breathed easy. Our relationship improved exponentially with every A and every soccer victory she brought home...
