Middle Division English / Language Arts

Middle Division English/Language Arts focuses on the fundamental elements of written expression, from simple sentences to paragraph structure, using a sequenced introduction of grammatical forms guided by symbols. Students will read and discuss literature from various sources including world and American fiction, nonfiction, dramatic literature, and poetry. Students will investigate the structures of literature such as plot, character traits and settings, and will practice inference and prediction skills. Students will explore written expression through research projects, stories, and personal narratives. Assistive technology aids in both reading text and creating written expression in the classroom.
Middle Division Math .
Prerequisites none
Middle Division Math is a course designed with an understanding of the individual challenges of grasping basic mathematical concepts for students with language based learning disabilities. Classes are small and focus on the development of math skills necessary for mastery.
Math Tutorial is a course for those students whose needs are so specific; they can not entirely be met in the classroom. Those students receive additional support through the Seeing Stars program.
Middle Division Science .

Middle Division Science develops students understanding of scientific method, practices, theory and skills against a diverse background of content. The course follows the state curriculums and provides the core information necessary to successfully take the state assessments. The goal of the course is to encourage students’ enthusiasm and desire to question, explore, and find answers to their questions about how the world works.
Middle Division Social Studies .

Middle Division Social Studies develops student understanding about the peoples of the world by focusing on six thematic areas: Political Science, Peoples of the nation and world, geography, economics, history and social studies skills and process.
Middle Division Reading Academy .
Prerequisites none
Reading tutorials are provided to students who need significant and continued support to master deficits in their reading skills. These tutorials are individualized to each student’s specific need, and students are grouped together based on their profiles. The reading tutorial curriculum is guided by each student’s Individual Education Plan; as a result, students are ineligible to receive credit for this course towards a state sanctioned diploma.
Middle Division Physical Education & Health .

Physical Education/Health is designed to provide instruction to students to improve their knowledge, skills, and attitudes about health and physical fitness which will promote healthy behaviors that will improve their quality of life beyond Chelsea School. Additionally Students are exposed to a variety of games and activities with the purpose of fostering both a sense of good sportsman ship as well as exploring athletic interests.
Middle Division Art .

Middle Division Art exposes students to a variety of artistic style and experiences so that they may gain a greater appreciation. Students work hands on a variety of projects meant to promote their knowledge of and appreciation for art.
Middle Division Music .
Prerequisites none
Music Appreciation exposes students to the nature of music by through the understanding of music as a language. This course also exposes students to a variety of musical style, sounds and experiences so that they may gain a greater appreciation of its variety and impact.
Keyboarding and Study Skills .
Prerequisites none
Study Skills and Keyboarding exposes students to basic skills and technologies that they will need in order to be successful upon matriculation to high school. Students focus for the first half of the year on basic organizational techniques and methods so that they form positive study habits. The second part of the year exposes students to the computer as a tool to help them be more successful students. Students practice writing and research skills working through an IT medium.
Social Skills .
Prerequisites none
Middle Division Social Skills groups students according to level of understanding of basic social interactions. Through a series of activities and projects foster an understanding of their place in group and one on one interactions as well as part of the larger global society. Students master the communication skills necessary to foster positive and long lasting relationships.
